When you play recorded music in your business, or in any other public environment, you need the copyright holder's permission - the purchase of a CD, DVD or downloading a music track does not provide the automatic right to play or show it in public. These rights of sound recording owners exist under the Copyright Act 1994, and are well established.
A PPNZ music licence makes it quick, easy and very affordable to obtain this permission. The licence covers many millions of tracks from recording companies and artists in New Zealand and worldwide.
PPNZ is a non-profit organisation and collects licence fees from thousands of New Zealand businesses and other music users, plus radio and television broadcasters and music service providers. We then pass these fees, less administration costs, to copyright owners as their public performance royalties.
While you may approach copyright holders directly, PPNZ is the only organisation in New Zealand offering a "blanket" licence that covers just about all recordings commercially released in New Zealand, as well as a many millions of tracks released in overseas territories.
