Music can be used to enhance most environments and can help create the right atmosphere for audiences of any kind.
If you are playing recorded music in a community hall, church hall, Government building or other public space, you still require the consent of the copyright holders unless you fall within the limited exceptions noted below. You can obtain this permission from a vast number of labels and artists from New Zealand and worldwide by applying for a PPNZ music licence.
Limited exemption for certain clubs and organisations
If your club, society or organisation plays music in public and:
- it is not for profit; and
- its main objects are charitable, or otherwise concerned with the advancement of religion, education or social welfare; and
- any proceeds earned by it from playing recorded music are applied solely for the purpose of the organisation;
Then it may be entitled to an exemption from obtaining a licence under s81 of the Copyright Act 1994. Please note that this exemption does not apply to sports and recreation clubs or working mens clubs. Please contact PPNZ to see if your community organisation or club is entitled to the benefit of this exemption.
PPNZ offers a licence at a flat rate of $165.00 (ex GST) per annum for recorded music use in public spaces.
